Shanghai Old Town

If you look at the map of Shanghai, you will see that most areas consist of straight streets and blocks, except for one area close to the river; it is a clear circle. The Old town is the part of the city that was once surrounded by the city wall. The wall has almost vanished, but the atmosphere of the past is still very much alive in this intriguing maze of little lanes, back alleys and courtyard houses. Family life happens on the street. We find our way through endless lines of laundry, past little grocery vendors, fish markets and hidden temples. We see old men playing mahjong in the shade, whilst toddlers chase dogs wearing pink coats and their mothers chat while knitting a new winter sweater. And of course there is food...lots and lots of food. Why not try a fresh vegetable bun from one of the steaming baskets or a warm sesame cookie? A walk in the Old Town will leave you an everlasting warm impression of a unique lifestyle in Shanghai and the gentle smiles of the neighbours you will meet.
